POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The position includes responsibility for planning, conducting, interpreting and reporting results from breeding, selection and management research programs designed to increase the technology for improving the production efficiency and profitability of sheep and Angora and meat goats. Through consultation with the industry, peers and administration, research priorities will be selected to sufficiently limit the research program to allow for in-depth research and follow through to meaningful conclusions. This position includes the responsibility for managing the assigned land and animal resources, employing and managing a capable support staff, managing the expenditure of maintenance funds and utilizing the latest research technology for conducting an effective research program. Much of the research will be conducted in cooperation with other scientists and producers. A major responsibility is to communicate research results to the scientific community and to the industry.

PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES:

New Zealand Society of Animal Production, 1990-present
International Goat Association, 1997-present

PRESENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Strategies for genetic improvement of meat and fiber production from sheep and goats.

Use of the FecB allele in marker-assisted selection programs for increased efficiency of lamb productin in fine-wool sheep.

Evaluation of the use of ultrasound measurements of muscle and fat in live sheep to predict the genetic merit for improved carcass composition. Estimation of genetic parameters of ultrasound measurements and incorporation of these measurements into selection indices.

Evaluation of a central performance testing program for fine-wool sheep. A comprehensive progeny test of performance tested rams is being conducted in order to determine what proportion of variation that is measured on the central performance test is realized in offspring in a range environment. Growth rate and fiber quality and quantity are the main traits of interest.

Evaluation of the Boer-Spanish crossbred goat relative to the Spanish goat for meat production in a range environment. The evaluation will focus on reproduction and maternal traits as well as growth and carcass traits.

Estimation of genetic parameters for fiber production in Angora goats. An experimental herd is undergoing selection for decreased fiber diameter to produce finer mohair.

PAST RESEARCH:

Genetic selection for heavy weight lean lamb: Estimation of genetic and phenotypic relationships among carcass measurements in sheep, using multivariate mixed models and sparse matrix techniques in order to develop breeding programs for leaner carcasses.

Economic analysis of lamb price schedules: Interpretation of economic signals given by the New Zealand lamb market to producers. Computer simulation was used to determine the economic value of genetic selection strategies. The goal was to develop a breeding strategy that would help sheep breeders make optimal selection decisions and to help producers increase returns from the sale of lamb carcasses.

Lamb growth and carcass composition: Published a series of 3 papers on growth rate in central performance tests of rams. This included mixed model estimation of genetic and environmental trends, analysis of factors affecting growth and a progeny test evaluation of growth rate and carcass composition.

Selection for reproduction in sheep: Estimation of variance and covariance components using a multivariate animal model for litter size, ovulation rate, scrotal circumference and body weight. Genetic diseases: Analyzed data for determining mode of inheritance of Spider Syndrome in Suffolk sheep.
